El Pa??s is running a series of articles on Hispanics in the United States. The most recent census data shows that there are at present 40 million native speakers of Spanish in the United States–approximately the same as the population of Spain–and census data on hispanics are notoriously low given the reluctance to be counted among illegal immigrants.
In the first article, Rulfo va a Alabama, the report focuses on the hispanic population in Alabama–a state the census reports is largely devoid of hispanics–and yet the reporter finds a thriving and growing hispanic community.
